Shipping giant chooses the Malta Flag

Throughout the years, ever since the promulgation of the Merchant Shipping Act in 1973 and with the introduction of advantageous tax solutions with regards to commercial and private vessels, Malta has seen a steady increase in ship registrations. Coupled with Malta’s reputation in relation to reliability and efficiency, it comes as no surprise that Malta has the largest ship registry in Europe and the sixth largest worldwide. Even with a record number of registrations year after year, Malta continues to reach new heights within the maritime sector

Over 80 vessels to sail with the Malta Flag

In fact, CMA CGM S.A, a French shipping and transportation company which is a world leader in maritime transport and logistics, has just announced that it will migrate all its vessels to the Malta flag. The new addition to the registry will amount to 11 per cent of all fleet tonnage registered in Malta. In total, CMA CGM will have over 80 vessels sailing with the Malta flag. This was officially announced by the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Ian Borg in a press conference earlier this week.

Malta Continues to Sustain its Reputation of Excellence

During the conference, he explained that a quarter of all cruise liners being built or commissioned intend to register under the Malta flag. Indeed, the continuous successes and expansions within the maritime industry continue to propel Malta forward, building upon Malta’s reputation as a pioneer in the maritime hub. Such efforts have so far been successful in solidifying the island’s standards of excellence and quality.
During the conference, Dr Ian Borg upheld, ‘The Maltese flag is not one of convenience but a flag of quality. Currently, there are more than 8,300 vessels and 780 luxury yachts bearing the Maltese flag.’

Malta’s Commitment to the Conservation of Marine Environment

The Minister has also further affirmed that Malta’s intention is not merely to expand the registry, but rather to foster sustainable growth in the midst of the current environmental landscape and the challenges it faces. Malta has constantly led discussions aimed at protecting the maritime environment and marine climate and will continue to actively pursue more effective protection and conservation of the Mediterranean waters.
